Recipe for Success as Star Lawyers

Mattias Strandberg, a former psychologist intern at Kandidata, did a  study on what it takes to be a successful lawyer. The study was done in collaboration with Linköping University, Kandidata and the Swedish Bar Association. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of Emotional Intelligence among successful lawyers active in business law. Similar studies are performed annually in Canada by the Canadian Bar Associations but this was the first study in Sweden.

The results were very interesting – and in tune with the Canadian studies.

A clear recipe for success emerged and as expected it was not based  on high IQ or solid legal knowledge only. The highest performing lawyers differed from more avarage lawyers by being high on:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Assertiveness
  • Stress Tolerance
  • Optimism

–      and relatively low on Flexibility.
